About Personal Branding Photography
What is personal branding photography?
Personal branding photography is about creating a set of natural, professional images that reflect who you are and what your business stands for. It’s much more than a headshot.
The aim is to help people feel a connection to you before they’ve even met you. Your imagery should build trust, show personality and give people a genuine sense of what it might feel like to work with you.
For business owners, especially those building a personal brand, your online presence is often the first impression people have of you. Whether someone finds you through Google, LinkedIn, Instagram or your website, your photos play a huge part in how you are perceived.
At Sadia Barlow Photography, we focus on natural, story-led personal branding photography that feels relaxed, authentic and genuinely reflective of you and your business.
What is the difference between a headshot and personal branding photography?
A headshot is exactly what it sounds like: a photo of your head and shoulders. It’s clean, professional and works brilliantly for LinkedIn profiles, speaker bios, press features and professional directories. It tells people what you look like.
Personal branding photography goes much further. The main premise is to build the know, like and trust factor, showing you in a variety of settings that bring your brand to life. Behind the scenes in your working environment, with clients, relaxing, doing what you do. It tells people who you are, how you work and what it might feel like to be your client.
If you’re building a business where people buy from you personally, personal branding photography gives you a library of images you can use consistently across your website, LinkedIn, Instagram and marketing, for years not months.
Do I really need personal branding photography for my business?
If you are the face of your business, or even a big part of it, then yes, good personal branding photography can make a significant difference.
People buy from people they feel they know and trust. Before someone contacts you, they will usually look at your website, LinkedIn or social media first. Your photos help shape that first impression long before a conversation happens.
Outdated, overly formal or generic imagery can unintentionally make a business feel less approachable or less established than it really is. Personal branding photography helps people connect with the person behind the business, giving potential clients a sense of who you are, how you work and what it might feel like to work with you.
For many business owners, strong imagery is no longer a luxury. It’s part of building visibility, trust and credibility online.
The Shoot Itself
Where do you shoot? Do you have a studio?
We don’t have our own studio, and we shoot on location almost every time, because personal branding photography is about your brand, not ours.
That means environments that are relevant to you and your business. Your office, a favourite café, a co-working space, a local street, a park: wherever feels most authentically you. The location becomes part of the story. Occasionally a hired studio is the right answer, and we can arrange that.
We are based in West London and work regularly across Chiswick, Richmond, Ealing and Brentford. We also travel across London and beyond. UK-wide travel is available, though a travel charge applies for locations outside West London.
I hate having my photo taken. Can you still help?
Absolutely. In fact, most people we photograph say exactly this at the start.
Feeling awkward in front of the camera is completely normal, especially if you’re not used to being photographed professionally. Our approach is very relaxed and natural. We guide you gently throughout the shoot, but nothing is overly posed or forced. We play music during sessions, chat throughout and focus on creating an environment where you can settle into yourself rather than feeling like you have to perform.
The aim is not perfection. It’s to capture images that feel like you at your best: relaxed, confident and approachable. Many clients tell us afterwards that the experience felt far easier and more enjoyable than they expected.
What if I don’t know how to pose?
Most people don’t, and honestly, that’s completely fine.
One of the things we hear most often before a shoot is “I feel so awkward in front of the camera.” The truth is, both Ian and I feel exactly the same, so we completely understand. The good news is that you don’t need to know how to pose before your session. It’s our job to help you.
What should I wear to my photoshoot?
We always encourage clients to wear clothes that feel true to who they are. The most successful personal branding shoots are usually the ones where people feel comfortable, confident and authentic, rather than trying to look like somebody else.
Before your shoot, Ian and I send a detailed preparation email covering everything from clothing choices and colours to makeup, styling and practical details that can make a real difference on the day. We also include links to products we’ve found genuinely helpful over the years, particularly simple things that help with shine, makeup touch-ups and feeling camera-ready without looking overly done.
During our pre-shoot meeting, we go through the finer details together including outfit changes, timings, locations and the overall feel you’d like the images to have. Many clients bring a few different outfit options to create variety throughout the shoot, giving you a wider range of images for your website, LinkedIn and social media.
Most importantly, we want you to still feel like you. The aim is never to create a version of you that feels staged or forced, but one that feels confident, polished and authentic.
Will I be guided through the whole process?
Absolutely. Ian and I work very hard before the shoot to properly understand both the business and the person behind it. We want to understand what makes you different, how you want to be perceived and the parts of your personality and brand that we should focus on visually.
The process usually starts with a questionnaire, followed by a pre-shoot meeting where we go through all the finer details together: locations, timings, outfit changes, messaging and the overall feel you’d like the images to have.
We also remain available on WhatsApp throughout the lead-up to the shoot, so clients can ask questions, send outfit ideas or simply feel supported during the process.
Before the session, we send a helpful preparation email covering clothing, makeup, styling and simple products we’ve found genuinely useful over the years, particularly for helping clients feel camera-ready while still looking natural and like themselves.
Our aim is always to make clients feel relaxed, confident and fully supported from beginning to end.

All images are delivered within 21 days via a private online gallery, from which you can download your images directly. The gallery is password protected and accessible only to you.
How often should I update my brand photos?
For most business owners, we usually recommend updating your professional headshots and core branding images every couple of years, particularly for platforms such as LinkedIn, your website and other places where first impressions really matter.
As your business evolves, your imagery should evolve with it. Very often, confidence, style, messaging and even the type of clients you want to attract changes over time, and your photographs should reflect where you are now, not where you were several years ago.
Ian and I also believe there’s real value in building a bank of images across different seasons. Seasonal photography can be incredibly powerful because it helps your content feel current, varied and relevant throughout the year, giving you much more flexibility for your website, LinkedIn, blogs, newsletters and social media.
Do you shoot outside West London?
Yes. We are based in West London and regularly work across Chiswick, Richmond, Brentford, and Ealing. We also travel across London and are available for shoots UK-wide.
A travel charge applies for locations outside West London. Get in touch to discuss your location and we’ll give you a clear, straightforward quote.
