What is Personal Branding Photography and do you need it?
There was a time when we avoided appearing on our own social media altogether.
As photographers, it felt easier to stay behind the lens. We’d post beautiful images of our clients, write captions about the work, share the occasional tip about lighting or location. Anything, really, to avoid the one thing we knew would make the biggest difference: showing up as ourselves.
Ian, in particular, was not what you’d call a willing subject. Put a camera in his hands and he’s completely at ease. Turn one on him and the shutters came down almost as fast. For a long time, that suited us both just fine.
But over the years, Ian became my test subject. New lighting setup? Ian. Trying out a different editing style? Ian. Experimenting with a location or a lens? Ian, whether he liked it or not. And something interesting happened. Gradually, almost without noticing, he stopped tensing up. He stopped thinking about the camera and started just being himself in front of it. The results were completely different.
We noticed the same shift in ourselves when we started showing up more honestly on social media. The posts where we shared a little of our own story, a moment behind the scenes, something real and unpolished, got more engagement, more replies, more enquiries than anything else we’d ever posted. People weren’t just responding to the images. They were responding to the people behind them.
That realisation changed how we think about personal branding photography. And it might change how you think about it too.
So what actually is it?
A headshot is a single image. Professional, clean, useful. It tells people what you look like.
Personal branding photography goes further. It’s a planned session designed to capture not just your face, but your presence. How you work. What your environment feels like. The small details that say something true about who you are and what it means to work with you.
The result is a library of images, not just one. Portraits, yes, but also lifestyle shots, behind-the-scenes moments, details that anchor your story. Images you can use across your website, your LinkedIn profile, your newsletters, your social media, consistently and over time.
Why does it matter now more than ever?
People make decisions about whether to trust you before they ever speak to you. They look at your website. They check your LinkedIn. They scroll your Instagram. In those few seconds, they’re not just assessing your credentials. They’re asking themselves a quieter question: do I get a sense of this person?
If your only photo is a corporate headshot from three years ago, or worse, a cropped holiday snap, the answer is probably no.
Personal branding photography gives people something to connect with. Not a polished, performative version of you. The real version. The one who shows up, does the work, and actually cares about the outcome.
Do you need it?
Not everyone does. If you’re not visible online, if clients find you entirely through referrals and word of mouth, a simple headshot may be all you need right now.
But if you’re building an online presence, growing a personal brand, putting yourself out there on LinkedIn or Instagram or your own website, then yes. The quality and authenticity of your imagery will either support that work or quietly undermine it.
We’ve seen it make a real difference, not just for our clients, but for ourselves. The day we started showing up properly, with images that actually looked and felt like us, things shifted.
It doesn’t have to be a big production. It just has to be honest.
