The Likeability Factor: Why Your LinkedIn Headshot Is Doing More Than You Think
The Likeability Factor: Why Your LinkedIn Photo Is Doing More Than You Think
I always look at the photo.
When someone sends me a connection request, when a new name appears in my notifications, when I am about to get on a call with someone for the first time, I look at their LinkedIn photo. Every time.
Not because I am judging whether the photo is technically good. I am looking for something harder to name than that.
I am looking for the likeability factor.
That quality in a photo that makes you think: I would enjoy talking to this person. They seem genuine. There is something about them I want to know more about.
I have been a personal branding photographer in West London for nearly a decade. I photograph people for a living. And I can tell you that the likeability factor is not about looking polished. It is not about having perfect lighting or an expensive outfit. It is something else entirely, and it is absolutely possible to photograph for it.
What the Likeability Factor Actually Is
When I look at a LinkedIn photo and feel that pull of likeability, I am usually responding to a combination of things:
- A genuine expression, not a performance of confidence but actual ease
- Eyes that are engaged with the camera, as if the person is really present rather than tolerating the experience
- A sense of the person’s personality coming through, something that hints at how they might actually be in a room
- An environment or context that feels relevant to who they are, not a blank wall or a stock-photo backdrop
- The quiet feeling that what you are seeing is real, not constructed
None of these things are about technical perfection. They are about authenticity. And authenticity is not something that happens automatically in front of a camera. Most people tense up, perform a version of themselves they think looks professional, and produce an image that feels stiff and disconnected from who they actually are.
That is not a criticism. It is just what happens when people are not used to being photographed. The camera picks up everything, including the discomfort.
What Most LinkedIn Photos Are Missing
The majority of LinkedIn profile photos I see fall into one of a few categories:
- The conference crop: a photo taken at an event, cropped to show just the face, with a blurry crowd or banner in the background
- The corporate headshot: technically fine, usually well lit, but completely devoid of personality
- The old faithful: a photo that was taken several years ago and no longer reflects where the person is in their business or their life
- The phone selfie: taken with good intentions but without the lighting, framing or direction that makes a photo actually work
What almost all of these have in common is that they tell you very little about who the person actually is. They are placeholders rather than introductions. And on a platform where your photo is often the first and sometimes the only thing someone sees before deciding whether to connect, that matters more than most people realise.
Why People Comment on the Photo, Not Just the Post
Something interesting happens when clients update their LinkedIn photos after a shoot with us. The engagement does not just go up on their posts. People comment on the photo itself.
Not just ‘great photo’ – though that happens too. Comments that say things like ‘this really looks like you’ or ‘I finally feel like I know what you do’. Old connections they had not heard from in months suddenly getting in touch. New connection requests from people they have never met, who found them through a comment thread or a shared post.
This happens because a good personal branding photo does not just show what someone looks like. It communicates something about who they are and how it might feel to work with them. And that is the thing that makes people want to reach out.
How We Photograph for the Likeability Factor
At Sadia Barlow Photography, we do not direct people into poses and fire off a set of technically competent images. That is not what produces the likeability factor.
What does produce it is time. Conversation. Moving slowly at the beginning of a shoot, talking properly, letting the person settle into the situation before we start taking pictures that really matter.
We shoot on location across West London, in places that feel relevant to the person and their work. A coach might be photographed in a relaxed setting in Chiswick or Richmond. A consultant might choose a contemporary space in Ealing or Brentford. The environment is part of the story.
We also play music throughout every shoot. It sounds like a small thing, but it changes the energy in the room entirely. People stop thinking about the camera and start being themselves.
That is when the likeability factor appears. Not when someone is performing confidence, but when they have forgotten to perform it.

Does Your LinkedIn Photo Have the Likeability Factor?
Go and look at your profile now. Not at your headline or your experience. Just the photo.
Does it look like you, the you that exists right now, doing the work you are doing today? Does it make you seem like someone worth connecting with? Would you reach out to that person?
If the answer is not an immediate yes, it might be time for a new set of images.
We offer a free 20-minute consultation call, no pressure and no obligation. Just a conversation to see if we are the right fit.
